Escape Gear Fabrics Explained: Polyenduro vs Polycotton Tough Canvas vs Traditional Cotton Canvas
Escape Gear's seat covers come in three distinct fabrics, each with different properties, strengths and ideal use cases. Here's how to choose the right one for your bakkie, 4x4 or off-road vehicle.
Escape Gear seat covers are manufactured in South Africa using three distinct fabric technologies. Each is engineered for specific conditions and usage patterns. Choosing the wrong fabric won't mean your covers fail — all three are durable — but choosing the right one means your covers perform at their best for your specific situation.
The Three Fabrics at a Glance
| Fabric | Water Repellency | Weight / Durability | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polyenduro | High | Lightweight, abrasion-resistant | Daily drivers, wet climates, clean working environments |
| Polycotton Tough Canvas | Moderate–High | Heavy duty, stiff initially | Hard-working bakkies, construction, farming, bush |
| Traditional 100% Cotton Canvas (510g) | Moderate | Natural breathability, proven longevity | Hot climates, long-distance driving, classic 4x4 look |
Polyenduro: Best for Daily Drivers and Wet Conditions
Polyenduro is Escape Gear's modern synthetic fabric, developed specifically for the rigours of the South African climate. It is a high-tenacity polyester weave with a water-repellent treatment applied during manufacturing.
What it does well:
- Repels spills and light rain effectively — water beads on the surface and rolls off
- Quick-drying — important if muddy passengers are a frequent reality
- Lightweight and relatively soft against bare skin compared to canvas options
- Available in black only
Limitations: Polyenduro does not breathe as naturally as cotton. In extreme heat with prolonged exposure to sun, it can become warm. Parking in the shade or using a sunshield minimises this.
Best for: Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max owners who use their bakkie daily in mixed conditions — tarmac, gravel, occasional off-road — and want easy-clean performance.
Polycotton Tough Canvas: Built for Hard Working Bakkies
Polycotton Tough Canvas is a heavy-duty blended fabric combining the strength of polyester with the natural breathability of cotton. It is Escape Gear's traditional workhorse fabric and has been in production for many years.
What it does well:
- Exceptional durability — the blend resists abrasion from heavy use, tools being thrown on seats, and frequent high-impact entry and exit by large occupants
- Better breathability than pure synthetic, making it more comfortable in South African summer heat
- Available in Tuff Charcoal, which conceals dirt and dust effectively
Break-in period: Polycotton Tough Canvas is stiff when new and softens with use over the first few weeks. This is normal and does not affect durability.
Best for: Farmers, construction teams, mine workers, game reserve operators, and anyone whose bakkie does genuinely hard work. The Tuff Charcoal colourway is particularly well suited to fleet vehicles where a professional appearance must be maintained despite heavy daily use.
Traditional 100% Cotton Canvas (510g): Natural and Time-Tested
Escape Gear's Traditional Cotton Canvas is a 510-gram pure cotton canvas — the same fabric category used in traditional 4x4 canvas canopies and safari equipment. At 510g/m², it is a heavy-weight canvas, substantially thicker than the canvas used in clothing or light covers.
What it does well:
- Natural breathability — cotton fibres allow air circulation, which significantly reduces seat temperature in summer
- Classic aesthetic — the cotton weave has a distinctly traditional look that suits classic Land Rovers, Defenders, and heritage 4x4 builds
- Available in Light Khaki and Grey
- Cotton naturally resists static build-up and has hypoallergenic properties
Limitations: Cotton absorbs water rather than repelling it, so recovery from saturation takes longer than synthetic options. For vehicles regularly exposed to rain or deep river crossings, Polycotton or Polyenduro will be more practical.
Best for: Long-distance driving, hot dry climates (Karoo, Northern Cape, Limpopo), classic 4x4 enthusiasts, and vehicles that are garaged and not regularly exposed to heavy rain.
Colours Available by Fabric
